THE VENUE
Modern Haiga is an annual collection of graphic poetry in two distinct editions. The first edition for each year is the digital (online) edition
at www.ModernHaiga.com. Any work accepted will be included in the digital edition. The second edition for each year is the full-color print edition,
a perfect bound book. It will include a selection of the best works from the digital edition, but not all works published online. Any submission of
a work to Modern Haiga is a submission to both the digital and the print editions for the current year. The digital editions are archived online.
SUBMISSIONS SCHEDULE
Modern Haiga has a continuous open submissions period. Everything submitted and accepted in a calendar year will be published in the digital
edition of Modern Haiga for that year and also will be eligible for selection for the print edition of Modern Haiga for the year. As
selections are made for the digital edition, they will be posted online on a continuous flow basis. This all adds up to your not having to worry much
about any deadlines. We publish both in the print full-color edition, that is, a perfect-bound book of selected haiga from the year, and in the online
digital edition.
EDITORIAL POLICY
Modern Haiga is an annual—both print and digital—dedicated to publishing and promoting fine modern graphic poetry, especially but not limited to,
haiku, senryu, tanka, cinquain, cinqku, crystallines, cherita, and sijo. We are interested in combined art and verse of high quality. Editorial decisions
are taken by a board of editors. Serious poetry and adult themes are appreciated. Doggerel and anything that is pornographic or in any way nasty, hateful,
bigoted, or partisan political, will not be accepted. All such judgments will be made at the sole discretion of the editors.
ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS
Any work submitted in any language other than English will be considered for publication only if accompanied by an English translation for simultaneous
publication. For submissions in languages other than English, it is a good practice to query the Editor before submitting.
GRAPHIC ART — IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS - PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
Modern Haiga has the facilities to reduce the size of graphic files, so please send us your best quality, highest resolution files.
We expect the print edition to be in a letter-size format, so page images will be 6.5" wide x 9" high at the maximum and that includes
headers and footers. That means your work needs to be readable at no more than 6.5"w x 8"h. The higher your submissions' resolution,
the better.
Please keep these proportions in mind when preparing your graphic files. The poetry within graphics must be readable and legible at these sizes.
Both the digital and print editions will include full-color, so both full-color and black-and-white graphics are welcome. Graphic files will
be sized as necessary for webpage exhibition and, if selected, for printing. If you cannot meet technical standards and want advice, please feel free to ask.
Graphics should be complete as submitted. That is, Modern Haiga will not HTML-code special designs, frames, etc., for individual works.
All works in the
digital edition will appear against a black background. In the print edition, works will appear against a white background. Therefore, any edging, box,
or frame should be included in the graphic as submitted. For graphics with a white background, at least a minimal box outside edge should be included with
the graphic. If works without a necessary box edge or mat background are accepted, Modern Haiga will add the needed elements.
We strongly encourage you to include your credits (signature) on the artwork itself.
If the art and the verse are by two people, the credits should specify which is which.
If both the art and verse are by one person, such specification is not required.
NO SIMULTANEOUS SUBMISSIONS
Please do not submit anything on offer anywhere else. We are not in the market for works under consideration for publication elsewhere.
NOT PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED
We primarily seek to publish fine graphic poetry that has not been previously published. Each artist/poet is personally responsible for noting in the
submission any previous publication of any submitted work. We may select previously published work of extraordinary merit, from time to time; generally,
at our own initiative.
PLEASE NOTE
This is an edited annual. We DO NOT publish everything that is submitted to us. We reserve the right to exercise editorial discretion in ALL cases.
If, for any reason, you cannot cope with rejection, better not to make submissions. We use only a portion of the submissions that we receive. There
are plenty of other websites which are unedited and where you can post your work with no editorial interference if that is what you seek. We will
publish multiple submissions from individuals but that does not mean that anyone has carte blanche to be published here. This applies to the editors
themselves, whose submissions are equally subject to the selection process of the editorial board. When we make selections, we generally will notify
you individually. The issue is posted online before the print publication; those submissions published online are accepted and those that are not
published online were not accepted. Occasionally, we may want to offer some editorial comment, assistance, guidance, etc., in which case, we will
respond to your submission before publication.
HOW TO SUBMIT FOR Modern Haiga
You may submit up to a dozen works at one time. We may publish as few as 1 or 2 works or a larger number. Please do NOT send us works that are still
in work. Please send us polished works, error-free. Make your submission by sending your poems in to Modern Haiga in the body of an email or
attached to an email as a JPG, GIF, PNG or other common graphic file. We strongly prefer JPG files but will consider other formats. If you have a
special situation you want to discuss, please feel free to write any editor.
